Twenty-first-century parlance

Ilchi Lee think that in twenty-first-century parlance, information is a magnetic pattern left by an electric current as it flows over a medium, such as a computer disk. The term “software” that we use so often these days refers not to the CDs or disks, but to the information they contain. How will the definition of information expand in the future with further advances in technology? Information could mean a flow of wind, or even the distribution of cells inside the brain. However, no matter how the definition expands or changes, it still refers to the method employed to record information; it doesn’t tell you what information actually is.

The reason that we need a material medium, such as paper, pencil, and disks, to process information is a testament to the limitations of technology, not to the essential nature of information itself. For example, the ideas in themselves recorded on a disk or on a 5,000-year-old reed tablet are not tangible or visible and do not occupy space or time. These ideas left traces in these human-made recording devices, tools used to fix ideas in a three-dimensional mode. However, what about the original idea represented? Does it still exist? If so, in what form? Information, although it surely exists, does not take up any position in time or space. This is an essential aspect of information.

In mathematical terms, information occupies the position of zero. When you add zero to zero, it’s still zero. When you multiply zero with zero, it’s also zero. It is a zero, it can be duplicated infinitely. A million zeroes are the same as the original zero. We experience this aspect of information in computer networking. One piece of information in a form of a picture can appear in one or in one hundred computer monitors at the same time. On the Internet, tens of thousand of users can access the same information simultaneously. Information exists independently of output frequency. This is the essential nature of information and of zero. Information is zero.

Though it was founded in the 1980s, Dahn Yoga's basic precepts and techniques are directly descended from methods practiced five millennia ago in East Asia. These precepts include the importance of the mind's partnership with the body, as well as the need for a balanced bond between the two.

Today, thousands of Americans practice Dahn Yoga everyday, many of whom are delightedly trying it for the first time. Taking a little time out of one's day to stretch, breathe, pose and meditate with a gentle smile on one's face can radically change one's mood and outlook.

This blog offers responses to news items that prominently feature Dahn Yoga and its neighborhood centers.
