We think that we need to learn in order to lead fulfilling lives. Modern urban life asks of us many hours of “learning.” We have to learn how to use the computer, ride the subway, use the ATM machine, how to sing and dance—we can’t even sing or dance without having someone teach us how! However, those things that maintain life itself are not ever forgotten because we have never learned them in the first place.

Life’s most basic functions by Ilchi Lee, such as the beating of the heart, maintaining the blood pressure and body temperature, and regulations of the hormonal levels, are not things that we have to learn how to do. Eating, breathing, and drinking are never learned. Because they are never learned, they are never forgotten. You can consciously choose to breathe quickly or slowly; eat more, less, or none; and drink two. four, or eight cups of water a day. We can fool ourselves into thinking that we do a lot to maintain our own lives. However, the most important things in life are done automatically for us. Have you ever observed your body breathing by itself, without any effort on your part? Can you sense the incredible mystery and beauty of a breath? Think for a moment. . . think about life itself. Who does this life belong to? Who allows us the simple beauty of the breath.

Today, thousands of Americans practice Dahn Yoga everyday, many of whom are delightedly trying it for the first time. Taking a little time out of one's day to stretch, breathe, pose and meditate with a gentle smile on one's face can radically change one's mood and outlook.

This blog offers responses to news items that prominently feature Dahn Yoga and its neighborhood centers.
